For the better part of nine months, we have packed and cleaned and sorted and tossed. We have agonized and planned and goodbye’d and moved. We have done chores. So many chores.
We bought a sailboat but we had not sailed it. Until yesterday. That’s when we sailed.
And it was every bit at glorious as we imagined it would be.
15-20 knots of wind on the beam and sunshine for days.
We all took turns at the helm. Bear didn’t fall in. She was mildly petrified (if that’s a thing), but no MOB practices were needed. So — winning.
The Ruby Vi performed like a champ, even with her rookie crew muddling our way through sloppy jibes and awkward tacks.
Since moving aboard nearly two weeks ago, the seller’s boat broker has repeatedly offered to take us sailing. Always with a to-do list of what seemed like more pressing matters, we asked for a raincheck. Again and again.
But when he showed up on our breezy dockside yesterday morning, we knew it was time.
The list of things to accomplish (read: fix, replace, clean, organize, buy) did not shorten while we were hitting 10 knots (with a reef) on the Chesapeake or motoring up the South River back to our marina. But taking the time to sail — to actually do this thing at the center of our new universe — was worth its weight in to-do lists.
We needed yesterday’s gentle reminder that if we don’t attack our massive goal from other angles once in a while, we’re pretty much just suckers on a boat doing all the chores all the time.
Clearly, we’ll own the Suckers on a Boat title — we’ve gone whole hog on that one — but we definitely want to be Suckers on a Boat Who Sail.

Congratulations. It must have been glorious and you are in such a beautiful area to learn sailing. Love reading about your journey as it progresses. Continued smooth seas and winds just perfect for Ruby Vi and her passionate crew. 😊
Thank you, Carol! ❤️
Love that you finally had her out to sail! and so happy that you had such beautiful weather. May the seas continue to be so kind to you and your family.

Hey guys I enjoyed reading this and look forward to more. It looks like you are on the East Coast? Happy adventures, I’m so excited for you guys. I’m sure some people thought it was crazy idea. Not me. Go for it.
Ha! Spot on, Jena 😉 but lots and lots of support, too! We’re in the east thru November and then plan to head to the Caribbean post-hurricane season. The big journey begins from there! Thanks for staying in touch! 😘
Wait…I thought we were moving to Australia with you guys? Wtf(H)? I can’t wait to follow your adventure! I’m so amazingly impressed! Godspeed!
Australia could definitely still be in the cards 😜. Thanks, Megan! ❤️
