I used to be a coffee snob. Boat Life changed that. I’ll drink just about anything now. Don’t get me wrong, I’d still give my left thumb for a Starbucks quad shot latte, but onboard, our local Caribbean instant brand serves is purpose just fine.
Nowadays, more than ever, it’s what’s on top that counts.
In one of our earlier posts about moving aboard, I (Molly) confessed that, despite shedding nearly all of our worldly possessions, I moved aboard with a Nespresso machine (a little one) and three Nespresso frothers.
Yes — three.
Whenever possible, my coffee has a frothy, sugary, streusel-y top.
My sister asked recently, in a comment on our Q & A page, if Boat Life made me relinquish my desperate hold on this glorious version of a latte. Boat Life did no such thing!
Here’s how you, too, can make this magic happen in your own house:
- Buy a frother. It doesn’t have to be a fancy Nespresso branded one, even the little stick/battery op ones will do.)
- Make sure you have milk, half and half, and brown sugar
- Froth your preferred milk with a splash of half and half (this makes thick froth)
- Pour froth directly into hot coffee
- Top with a more-than-seems-reasonable amount of brown sugar
- Sit back and enjoy.
The key here, is to leave your coffee unsweetened and to let all of the sweet magic happen in the froth.
If you drink your coffee with cream and sugar, I strongly encourage you to give this a try.
Pro-Tips: 1 - Wanna mix it up a little? Add a dusting of cinnamon to your brown sugar streusel. 2 - It works with eggnog too! (Try this winter holiday variation: milk and heavy splash of eggnog. Top with brown sugar and nutmeg. Voila) 3 - Recently, after running out of brown sugar 😩, I've been adding a spoonful of cinnamon sugar to my black coffee before pouring slightly sweetened (with plain ol' white sugar) milk froth on top. The froth picks up some of the cinnamon when you dump it in and creates a lovely little cinnamon swirl on your latte. To. Die. For. 4. - Want a big-kid Mocha? Try adding a heaping spoonful of unsweetened baking cocoa and a bit of white sugar to your cup of black coffee. Then, top with milk froth (and maybe even sprinkle some some raw sugar over the top). So. good.
